About this ebook

The town of Millbrook had always been a place where secrets festered in the shadows, where whispered conversations died when strangers approached, and where certain families carried darkness in their bloodlines like an inherited disease. At the edge of this forgotten town, just a mile from Jimmie Edward's house, stood an old, forgotten, and truly desecrated graveyard.

The graveyard had been there longer than anyone could remember—longer than the oldest church, longer than the town hall with its crumbling colonial facade, perhaps even longer than the town itself. The headstones leaned at impossible angles, their inscriptions worn smooth by centuries of wind and rain, until the names of the dead had been erased from both memory and stone. Gnarled oak trees twisted overhead, their branches forming a canopy so dense that even at noon, the graveyard remained shrouded in premature twilight. The iron fence that once enclosed it had long since rusted and collapsed, leaving gaps like missing teeth through which the fog would seep on cold nights, spreading through the town like a contagion.

It was a place that had always cast a dark shadow over the edge of town, and its reputation ensured Jimmie constant nightmares, fueled by the chilling stories his grandfather would whisper whenever he stayed at their home.

Jimmie was ten years old—small for his age, with wide brown eyes that seemed to absorb everything around him and sandy hair that his mother was always trying to tame. He was a sensitive child, the kind who felt things more deeply than other children, who could sense when something was wrong even when the adults smiled and assured him everything was fine. His parents said he had an overactive imagination. His teachers said he was prone to daydreaming. But Jimmie knew better. He knew that sometimes the things that lurked in the corners of his vision, the shadows that moved when they shouldn't, were more real than anyone wanted to admit.

His grandfather had always been different from other grandparents. While his friends' grandparents baked cookies and told silly jokes, Jimmie's grandfather spoke in riddles and watched him with eyes that seemed to see through skin and bone, straight into the trembling soul beneath. The old man's house was different too—it stood apart from the other homes, surrounded by a wild garden where plants grew in strange patterns, and the air always smelled of herbs, incense, and something else, something older and harder to name.

One night, the air in the house felt thick and strangely charged, as if a storm was building just beneath the floorboards, waiting to erupt. Jimmie was spending the night at his grandparents' house, something he did once a month despite the knot of dread that always formed in his stomach when his parents announced the arrangement. His grandmother had been quieter than usual during dinner, her wrinkled hands moving in small, deliberate gestures as she served the food, her lips moving soundlessly as if she were counting or reciting something only she could hear.

His grandfather announced he was going to make the graveyard story more vivid than ever before. The old man's eyes gleamed in the candlelight, reflecting the flames in a way that made Jimmie's skin crawl. He feigned reassurance, promising Jimmie that it was all just make-believe, just a story to help him understand the thin places in the world where reality grew gauzy and uncertain. Jimmie, though nervous, went along with his grandfather's plan because what else could a ten-year-old boy do when the adults in his life had already decided his fate?

He was tragically unaware of the truth: his grandparents were not merely eccentric storytellers, but Witches—practitioners of an ancient and terrible art passed down through generations, keepers of secrets that predated Christ and civilization, servants of powers that demanded blood and sacrifice in exchange for gifts no mortal should possess.

The house itself seemed to know what was coming. The walls creaked and settled with sounds like whispered warnings. The shadows in the corners grew longer and darker, reaching toward Jimmie with fingers he could almost feel brushing against his skin. The candles throughout the house flickered in unison, as if responding to some unseen breath, and the air grew colder despite the warmth of the late summer evening outside.

"Jimmie, it's getting late," his grandfather said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the floor beneath Jimmie's feet. The old man stood from the dinner table, his black robe rustling like the wings of some great carrion bird. "After you finish eating your dessert, we'll go upstairs and get you ready for bed."

Great book, the ending really surprised me. I didn't realize the whole family was in on it and didn't think Jimmy would really die. Can't wait to read his other books. I hope the books are just as good as this one.
