About this ebook

The thing in the woods had been dead for sixty-three years.

At least, that's what the town records claimed. But Luther Grimshaw knew better than to trust paperwork yellowed with age and bureaucratic indifference. He knew—though he'd never admit it, not even to himself—that some deaths don't take. Some graves are less resting places than prisons, and some prisoners never stop clawing at their cell walls.

Luther was twenty-four years old and had never been afraid of anything in his life. This wasn't courage; it was a deficiency, like colorblindness or tone-deafness. Where other men felt the prickling warning of ancestral dread, Luther felt only contempt. While his friends whispered about the abandoned Hartwell property in hushed, careful tones, Luther laughed—loud and braying, the sound of a man who mistakes recklessness for strength.

"It's just a grave like any other grave," he'd say, taking another pull from his beer. "Dead is dead."

But Jason Hendricks, who'd known Luther since they were both small enough to fear the dark, saw something else in his friend's eyes when he said it. Something that looked almost like desperation, as if Luther had to keep saying it to make it true.

The dare came on a Thursday night at McNally's Bar, where the lighting was poor and the whiskey was cheaper than it should be. Luther was three drinks past sober when Marcus Webb—a wiry man with a cruel smile and too many teeth—leaned across the table.

"I'll give you five hundred dollars," Marcus said, his words sliding out like oil, "if you dance on the werewolf's grave."

The bar went quiet. Even the jukebox seemed to pause between songs.

"That's not funny," Jason said, his voice tight.

"I'm not joking." Marcus pulled out his wallet, counted out five crisp hundreds, and laid them on the scarred wood table. The bills looked obscene in the dim light, too clean, too new. "But it has to be on the full moon. Those are the rules."

Luther stared at the money. Five hundred dollars would cover his rent for two months. Maybe three if he stretched it.

"Luther, don't," Jason whispered, grabbing his friend's arm. His fingers felt cold, clammy. "You know what they say about that place."

"They say a lot of things." Luther shook off Jason's grip and reached for the money. "All of it was just made-up crap."

But his hand hesitated, hovering over the bills. Just for a moment. Just long enough for Marcus's smile to widen.

"Unless you're scared," Marcus said softly.

The money disappeared into Luther's pocket.

The full moon rose three nights later, swollen and pustulent, like an infected eye watching the earth below.

Jason had tried everything to talk Luther out of it. He'd shown him the newspaper clippings from 1962, when the Hartwell family had vanished in a single night. He'd pointed to the police reports from 1947, clinical and spare in their description of what they'd found in the woods—remains consistent with animal predation, species unknown. He'd even taken Luther to the library, where he made him read the town's founding documents, which included a notation from 1823 warning settlers away from the "cursed hollow where the moon's children hunt."

Luther had laughed at all of it.

Now, standing at the edge of the woods with a video camera in one hand and a flashlight in the other, his laughter seemed very far away.

The forest was too quiet. That was the first thing Jason noticed: no insects, no night birds, no rustling of small creatures in the underbrush. Just silence, thick and suffocating, like the woods themselves were holding their breath.

"Maybe we should come back," Jason said, though he knew it was pointless. "Different night. When it's not so—"

The thing in the woods had been dead for sixty-three years. At least, that's what the town records claimed. But Luther Grimshaw knew better than to trust paperwork yellowed with age and bureaucratic indifference. He knew—though he'd never admit it, not even to himself—that some deaths don't take....

Its an alright short story. But as someone who craves a book with more story structure and descriptive writing I would not recommend this. It felt rushed and was sloppily thrown together.

This "book" , if it can be called a book , is short and without very many things that are called books . It is short and without much detail . I did not enjoy it very much as it had no plot or details that would have made for good reading .
