About this ebook

The seminar room on the third floor of the humanities building always smelled faintly of old floor wax, damp wool, and the bitter dregs of coffee left in cardboard cups from the morning session. It was an October Thursday so heavy with moisture that the air felt thick enough to chew. Outside the tall, arched windows, the rain moved across the quadrangle in thin, silver-grey strokes, blurring the Gothic stonework of the library opposite into charcoal smudges.

Inside, twenty-four graduate students and advanced undergraduates sat in a rough oval that constantly threatened to collapse into a circle. At the head of the room, Professor Bell—a man whose tweed jacket seemed permanently dusted with pipe ash he never smoked—was leaning against the radiator, arms folded over his chest, looking down at his worn leather shoes before raising his eyes to survey the room with calculated fatigue.

He had spent the better part of twenty minutes dismantling the concept of epistemological comfort. He spoke in a slow, rhythmic cadence designed to make his listeners feel as though their most cherished intellectual possessions were made of cheap glass.

“We spend our entire academic lives,” Bell had said, pacing three slow steps toward the blackboard, “building elaborate fortifications out of what we assume we know. We call it rigor. We call it method. But if we are entirely honest with ourselves—which is an occupational hazard few of us survive—what we are actually doing is seeking shelter. We are terrified of the dark room at the end of the corridor, so we paint the walls with axioms and pretend the light is coming from inside.”
