About this ebook

The third book in Lois Lowry's Giver Quartet, which began with the bestselling and Newbery Medal-winning The Giver.

Trouble is brewing in Village. Once a utopian community that prided itself on welcoming strangers, Village will soon be cut off to all outsiders.

As one of the few able to traverse the forbidding Forest, Matty must deliver the message of Village’s closing and try to convince Seer’s daughter Kira to return with him before it’s too late. But Forest is now hostile to Matty as well. Now he must risk everything to fight his way through it, armed only with an emerging power he cannot yet explain or understand.

"Told in simple, evocative prose, this companion to The Giver and Gathering Blue can stand on its own as a powerful tale of great beauty." —Kirkus (starred review)

Messenger is the masterful third novel in Lois Lowry’s Giver Quartet, which includes The Giver, Gathering Blue, and Son.

  • A Return to the World of The Giver: Discover what happens after Gathering Blue in this pivotal third installment of the acclaimed Giver Quartet, a cornerstone of young adult dystopian fiction.
  • A Corrupted Utopia: Village was once a sanctuary for the lost and lonely. Now, a creeping selfishness is turning neighbor against neighbor, threatening to build a wall against all outsiders.
  • A Dangerous Power: Matty has always been the only one who could navigate the Forest safely. But a mysterious power is awakening within him—a gift that could save everyone, or cost him everything.
  • A Sentient Forest: The woods that once protected Matty have turned against him. With thickening branches, poisonous sap, and a malevolent will of its own, the Forest has become his greatest enemy.

this was a fantastic tale, a good addition to the giver series, however i still love "The Giver" more. I thought it was interesting and converted Jonah's journey into a mission to become a leader of a town...i hope Lois Lowry continues to write in the Giver series because the original tale was the best i have ever read. :)

One of the very best books I ever read. Teaches a great lesson about selfishness. And how it can effect your whole town. It also combines all three of the books perfectly. This triolgy is the best that Lois has written.
