About this ebook

In fog-bound Victorian London, a narrator insists he is recording a true account of an "inscrutable Being" whose strange influence helped expose a terrible secret. What begins as an ordinary struggle for work and survival soon turns into a web of murder, hauntings, disguises, trances, and pursuit, with the enigmatic Devlin at its dark center. The atmosphere is thick with psychological unease and supernatural suggestion, and every hopeful turn seems shadowed by dread. The story opens among the modest comforts of Mr. Melladew, a devoted printing-office reader whose happiest concern is the future of his twin daughters. News that his long-lost brother-in-law, Richard Portland, has returned from Australia with a fortune promises relief and security for the family, while the narrator himself, newly unemployed, clings to a small secret savings book that offers brief hope. But the promise of prosperity collapses when Melladew is shattered by a newspaper report of the brutal murder of his daughter Lizzie in Victoria Park. As reporters, police, and grieving family members gather, the investigation deepens through whispered secrets, a mysterious sweetheart, and the troubling behavior of Lemon, whose fit, sleep-talking, and fear suggest he knows more than he dares admit. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.

About the author

B. L. Farjeon, born Benjamin Leopold Farjeon in 1838 in London to a Jewish family, built a remarkably varied literary life that carried him from early hardship and youthful work in the theater to a long career as a novelist, playwright, journalist, and editor in Britain and later in New Zealand. After emigrating, he helped shape colonial literary culture before returning to England, where he became a prolific and widely read writer of fiction for adults and younger readers alike. Farjeon was especially admired for his gift for storytelling: he wrote with pace, warmth, and an eye for vivid character, moving comfortably between suspense, social observation, humor, and sentiment. His work often explores class tension, urban life, moral choice, family bonds, and the struggles of ordinary people trying to secure dignity in a changing world. These concerns still feel fresh today because they speak to issues readers continue to recognize: inequality, ambition, resilience, and the desire for belonging. Farjeon's legacy lies in his ability to combine entertainment with human sympathy, making his stories both accessible and emotionally grounded. He remains a rewarding writer for readers who enjoy lively nineteenth-century fiction, strong plots, and compassionate portraits of everyday life.
