About this ebook

Complete and unabridged, with 57 full-page plates by Ivan Shishkin, Vladimir Makovsky and Vasily Perov. A provincial Russian town receives a group of young radicals, and within a season there are arson, scandal and a body in the park. Dostoevsky built the novel on a real murder — a student killed by his own revolutionary cell — and wrote it as a warning that has been read as a prophecy ever since. The chapter his publisher refused to print was restored only in the twentieth century. Fifty-seven plates of portraits and uneasy interiors by Kramskoi, Perov and their contemporaries give faces to a town where every drawing room hides a conspiracy.

About the author

Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) was a Russian novelist whose work probes faith, guilt and the mind under pressure. Arrested at twenty-seven for belonging to a liberal circle, he was subjected to a mock execution and spent four years in a Siberian prison camp, an ordeal that reshaped his writing. Crime and Punishment, The Idiot and The Brothers Karamazov followed, and made him one of the most influential novelists ever to write.
