Author tries to get too cute with phrasing in an attempt to build poetic suspense, but it's just confusing and cryptic. Eventually, the author provides explanations of the different confusing storylines, but while reading, you're not sure if that will happen. Very frustrating book. The absolute opposite of straight talk, which was clearly intentional. Couldn't wait for it to be over.

This was my introduction to Morrison and it struck me by how intense, powerful and steadfast her writing could be. This book carries no euphemisms. It calls the monster by its name: slavery. I loved how each character dealt with their suffering in their own way. How they did not let it define them. I loved watching them grow. They read to me like real people, beating vigorously through the pages. An instant favorite.

I finished Toni Morrison's Beloved only few moments ago. I am really only able to read during my lunch break at work, so suffice it to say it took me a while to read. I mention my reading habits not as an excuse, but more, in this instance, for praise because I know that it will not be long before I read this beautiful, haunting story again, and again. I don't tend to read in order to find adventure, or discover different worlds in which I can inhabit. I'm much more interested in an author's idea or perspective which differs from my own. I must say that I have found a gold mine in the late Ms. Morrison. I have begun watching interviews of her and really attempting to absorb the woman. As a wannabe writer, I have fallen into literary love with Toni Morrison. I will not attempt to give literary exegesis on the story of Beloved. I am neither equipped nor qualified to do so. All that I can do is offer my unabashed praise and love for Toni Morrison and her monumental achievement.
