THE ROMAN EMPIRE: AUGUSTUS — HOW ONE MAN REBUILT THE WORLD

In 44 BC, Julius Caesar was assassinated and Rome descended into civil war. His eighteen-year-old heir, Gaius Octavius, held no army and no formal standing, yet within five decades ended a century of conflict and reshaped the Western world.

By 27 BC, Octavius — now Augustus — had dismantled the Republic while preserving its outward forms, inaugurating roughly two centuries of relative peace across an empire of fifty million stretching from Britain to Arabia.

Drawing on Tacitus, Suetonius, and Augustus's own Res Gestae, alongside modern scholarship from Syme, Beard, Goldsworthy, and Everitt, the book covers the proscriptions of 43 BC, the defeat of Antony and Cleopatra at Actium in 31 BC, Livia's decades of influence, the fall of his daughter Julia under his own moral laws, and the deaths of his successive heirs before Tiberius's succession. Augustus died at Nola on 19 August, AD 14.

His legacy persists in the month of August, in the titles Kaiser and Czar, in Roman law as later codified under Justinian, and in the Aeneid, commissioned as part of his cultural programme. The book does not omit the proscriptions or the human cost of the peace Augustus built, but treats his political achievement as substantial by the standards of the historical record.
