The price of climbing ladders I did not initially care for #aliceadams , a novel that fell on my list as the recipient of the #1921 #pulitzerprize . While I had previously read the #boothtarkington novel #magnificentambersons owing to its placement on the #modernlibrarytop100novels ,and enjoyed it, from the beginning, I was quick to dismiss this novel as an aspirational yawner. I am glad I got through my initial disdain. The story was a contemporary novel, based on the years after #worldwari in a small industrial town where a pretty young woman where as a teenager had gone to all the best parties and met all the best young fellows, found herself being pushed to the side of the elite social circles much attributed to the humble and faithful career clerkship of her father for the town's big company. While still on a first name with the founder, his contemporaries have all been promoted while he remains on the company's lower rungs to the chagrin of his aspirational wife and daughter.
