Bhishma was surrounded by the Pandavas and their allies on the tenth day of the war, with Shikhandi placed in front because Bhishma would not fight him. Attacked from all sides, Bhishma was struck by countless arrows. Arjuna repeatedly cut down Bhishma’s bows and weapons and pierced him again and again. Bhishma clearly understood that it was Arjuna alone, not Shikhandi, who had the power to truly harm him. Realizing that the Pandavas were protected by Krishna and that his own time had come, Bhishma chose to stop resisting and accept his destiny.
