About this ebook

Complete and unabridged, with 60 full-page plates by William Blake, John Varley and Henry Clarence Whaite. Eleven medieval Welsh tales: Pwyll in the otherworld, the children of Llŷr, the dream of Macsen, Culhwch demanding forty impossible gifts, and three Arthurian romances older than the French ones. Lady Charlotte Guest translated them from the Red Book of Hergest between 1838 and 1845 while running an ironworks and raising ten children. Her English fixed these stories for the language, and Tolkien and Alan Garner both learned their trade partly here. Sixty plates of Welsh mountains, castles and coast by painters including Richard Wilson and David Cox carry the landscape these tales were born from.
