Sean Ryan is an independent researcher and writer specializing in cognitive performance, learning science, and reading pedagogy. He has spent over a decade studying the mechanisms of visual processing, memory consolidation, and language comprehension, drawing on primary research from cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and educational theory.
Ryan's interest in speed reading began during his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan, where he found himself overwhelmed by the volume of required reading across three majors—English, cognitive science, and philosophy. Unable to find a single source that combined scientific rigor with practical, actionable techniques, he began developing his own system through a combination of self-experimentation and review of the academic literature. Over the following years, he tested his methods with hundreds of participants in informal study groups and workshops, refining the approach through iterative feedback.
Before writing *Accelerated Reading*, Ryan worked as a curriculum designer for an online education startup and as a contributing writer for several popular science and productivity publications, including *Psyche*, *Aeon*, and *Art of Manliness*. His articles on learning and memory have been read by millions and have been translated into nine languages. He has also developed reading-training programs used by university writing centers, corporate training departments, and independent learners in over forty countries.
Ryan's approach to speed reading is distinguished by three commitments. First, he insists on grounding every technique in peer-reviewed research rather than anecdote or tradition. Second, he prioritizes comprehension and retention over raw speed, arguing that a technique that sacrifices understanding is not a legitimate reading method. Third, he advocates for contextual flexibility—the idea that the best reading speed depends on the material, the reader's goals, and the reader's current cognitive state, and that no single speed is optimal for all situations.
*Accelerated Reading* is his first book. He is currently at work on a second book, tentatively titled *The Learning Curve*, which applies similar science-based principles to the broader process of acquiring complex skills in adulthood.
Ryan lives in Portland, Oregon, with his partner and their two dogs. When not reading or writing, he can be found trail running in the Columbia River Gorge, playing fingerstyle guitar, or attempting to keep his sourdough starter alive through the Pacific Northwest winters. He does not read at eight hundred words per minute at the dinner table, and he recommends you do not either.
