The fluorescent lights in Laboratory 7 flickered with an ominous hum as Dr. Marcus Frances stared at the rejection letter with trembling hands. The paper was crisp, clinical—just like the words that shattered his life's work into a thousand pieces.
"We regret to inform you that your submission for the Pulitzer Prize in Scientific Achievement has been declined..."
The letter crumpled in his white-knuckled fist as a low growl escaped his throat. Twenty years. Twenty years of sleepless nights, failed experiments, and social isolation—all for nothing. The cure for the Marburg-Ebola hybrid virus, his masterpiece, was dismissed as "incomplete research" by a panel of bureaucrats who wouldn't know groundbreaking science if it bit them in their pompous faces.
The laboratory around him seemed to pulse with malevolent energy. Glass beakers caught the dying light, casting twisted shadows across the walls lined with specimen jars. Inside those jars, suspended in formaldehyde, were the remnants of his early test subjects—rats, then rabbits, then... other things. Things that shouldn't have survived as long as they did.
Frances stumbled toward the locked cabinet where he kept his most dangerous creations. His reflection in the steel surface was gaunt, hollow-eyed, a man consumed by obsession. If the world wouldn't recognize his genius, then perhaps it was time to show them what true power looked like.
With shaking hands, he withdrew two syringes filled with viscous, dark liquid. The Necro-Pathogen, as he'd privately named it, was a weaponized combination of the Marburg and Ebola viruses, genetically modified to attack the nervous system while keeping the host ambulatory. The second syringe contained his "enhancement serum"—a cocktail of stimulants and neural inhibitors designed to suppress higher brain function while amplifying aggressive instincts.
"If I can't be celebrated as a savior," he whispered to his reflection, "then I'll be remembered as a god of destruction."
The first injection burned like liquid fire as it entered his bloodstream. The second followed, and immediately his vision began to blur. His heartbeat thundered in his ears, a drum of war announcing the beginning of the end.
