About this ebook

The Book of Lord Shang, compiled by Shang Yang and his Legalist disciples in the Warring States Period, stands as the cornerstone text of Chinese Legalist political thought. This annotated English translation presents 24 intact chapters, marking two lost chapters for textual integrity, alongside full academic supplements crafted by translator Arthur Peng.

Centered on three core doctrines—oneness (yi) of state governance, the dual pillars of agriculture and war (nongzhan), and rule through impartial, severe law—the work lays out a radical institutional blueprint that transformed the State of Qin into a dominant power and laid groundwork for China’s first imperial unification. It details sweeping reforms: land reclamation policies, uniform reward-punishment systems tied to military merit, universal conscription for all genders and age groups, strict official legal supervision, and curbs on non-productive groups like wandering scholars and merchants.

Reject Confucian ritual and benevolent governance, Shang Yang argues consistent, transparent law, rather than personal virtue, stabilizes society. Harsh penalties deter crimes to eradicate punishment itself; all ranks, including royal tutors, face equal legal sanctions to uphold institutional credibility. Though long debated for its rigid authoritarianism, the text profoundly shaped two millennia of Chinese statecraft, influencing rulers from the Qin Empire to later reformers such as Wang Anshi.

This edition features standardized Pinyin, bilingual term glossaries, historical annotations, and appendices covering figures, geography and Legalist jargon. Designed for comparative politics, sinology and pre-Qin philosophy readers, it unpacks the text’s ancient context while highlighting its enduring debates over state power, individual incentives and legal order.
