Unlikable main character with almost no sympathetic traits beyond "whiny, spoiled, and rich." This appears to mostly be about the privileged putting a subclass in literal bondage for supposedly utilitarian purposes - while openly pursuing power for power's sake. I lost interest by page 50. If your escapist fantasy is the politics of Medici-era Florence with a whiff of Roman indentured servitude, then... yikes.

There are so many moving parts you'll never know the real story until Amalia does. I love the magic system. The politics and social issues add wonderful depth to the story. You constantly want to know more. More backstories, world history, how artifacing works. I want more. I want so badly to visit ANY of the libraries mentioned.

Melissa Caruso was born on the summer solstice and went to school in an old mansion with a secret door, but despite this auspicious beginning has yet to develop any known superpowers. Melissa has spent her whole life creating imaginary worlds, and in addition to writing is also an avid LARPer and tabletop gamer.
She graduated with honors in Creative Writing from Brown University and has an MFA in Fiction from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Melissa's first novel, The Tethered Mage, was shortlisted for a Gemmell Morningstar award for best fantasy debut.
