About this ebook

In this luminous Danish classic, a young man returns to his coastal village after years away, only to find that time and circumstance have transformed everything—and everyone—he once knew. Jacobsen's exquisite prose captures the bittersweet reunion of old friends and the subtle ways love, duty, and nostalgia shape the human heart. A meditation on growth, loss, and the impossibility of returning home unchanged.

About the author

Jens Peter Jacobsen (1847–1885) was a Danish novelist, poet, and botanist whose lyrical, psychologically intricate works profoundly influenced Scandinavian literature. Though he published sparingly due to illness, his innovative approach to character development and sensory prose made him a pioneering figure in European Naturalism and proto-Modernism.

Haberdash Books is dedicated to bringing overlooked works of European and world literature into English. We specialise in nineteenth and early twentieth-century fiction from lesser-translated languages and traditions.
