About this ebook

The greatest haunted house story ever written—the inspiration for the hit Netflix horror series!

One of The Atlantic’s Great American Novels of the Past 100 Years

First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a “haunting”; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own.

Came into this book with high expectations of a great story to be told. Especially coming from the show... I was massively disappointed. The book did suck me in and I loved that. I cared about the characters and wanted to see SOMETHING happen, but nothing ever did. There was no big reveal, no massive ghost haunting, no violence, no massive plays on the imagination... just talking and no action. I kept going as I thought there MUST be something waiting for me... there was not. I can honestly say that I DO NOT understand the love for this lackluster useless waste of time book. Go read almost anything else from another author and have a blast. This was really boring with no payoff.

what a flimsy sample. We are hoping to get a long enough read in to determine if the cost of the book ($8.99) to purchase such a short book, but most of the 'sample' is given up to the person writing the introduction.

after watching the Netflix series I had high hopes, but alas. much time was spent building to a crescendo that didn't arrive in my opinion and the ending was lacking.
