A Lady's Guide to Scandal: A Novel

Charming, witty, thought-provoking Eliza is a wonderful book heroine, strong but not always assured, trusting but easily disappointed. She's surprised to find that she inherited a windfall from her late husband, however there's a stipulation that it can be taken away from her if the successor to the title at any time deems her behavior to be inappropriate. And this successor is the man she once thought she'd marry, before her parents essentially sold her to his titled uncle. With this quiet threat hanging over her and wanting to distance herself from her late husband's estate and relatives, she ventures to a new city and runs into a new suitor, one who is dashing and charming and everything she thinks she's looking for. So Eliza is in a bit of a pickle. She can't carry on with the new interest without risking the censure of the old, a man who'd like to solve the problem all around by marrying Eliza himself - though his motives are complex and might be questionable. This bit of a love triangle is worked out with a lot of secrets and family interference for a very HEA with my favorite of the suitors. There are plenty of twists to keep you on your toes, and the romances don't always go the way you think they're going to. The writing really brings the characters to life and I especially loved Eliza's cousin, Margaret. She was a true breath of fresh air, a real contrast to Eliza's grasping parents. All in all, it's a delightful story from a talented author. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
