About this ebook

In 2024 Amazon blocked over 275 million suspected fake reviews, and Trustpilot quietly noted that the vast majority of the 4.5 million it pulled were five-star, not one-star.

I wrote this because I kept getting the same question over warung coffee: a competitor down the road has two hundred reviews and I have twelve, half of theirs are five-word praise from accounts that reviewed nothing else, do I just buy some back? My answer is no, and not for a moral reason you can wave away. The platforms have spent ten years building filters that get better every cycle. Yelp routes about 18% of submissions to a not-recommended bin. Trustpilot took down 7.4% of everything submitted last year, 90% of it by machine, before a human looked. Buy two hundred reviews and you are renting visibility until the next sweep deletes the lot.

The honest version is slower and it works because nobody can delete it. Ask the right customer at the moment the job is done and they are relieved, on the channel they already used to message you, with a question about how it went and not a script. Ten real reviews a quarter compound. I have watched a small operator do exactly that and out-count a fake-buying rival inside eighteen months, while the rival's pile got culled in one platform pass. That case is a composite drawn from running three small businesses, not a single name, and I say so plainly because pretending otherwise would be its own small astroturf.

There is also the part nobody asking-for-shortcuts wants to hear: since October 2024 the FTC can fine up to $51,744 per fake review under 16 CFR Part 465, and that figure was not invented to scare you, it is the published ceiling. The whole book sits on one bet about time horizons. The astroturfer is playing a short game. You are probably in business longer than that.

This is a working operator's guide to Google reviews and marketplace reviews on Shopee, Tokopedia and Amazon, covering review velocity, dispute recovery after sabotage, and an honest review flywheel an SME can actually sustain. Written from running small businesses in Indonesia, but the diagnostics and dispute playbooks travel the same to any emerging market or one-shop operation.
