I first read this book as a teen in the 70's and it is still as powerful as ever. I find it interesting that my focus this time through was more on Smith's social commentary. It still resonates today. We have made some progress with the ills that caused so much trouble back then but many still remain.

I read this book as a teenager, and it has inspired me since then in everything I do. Servant to others and the fact that you put your life on the line just because your heart wants to help others. I feel that any youth wanting to be firefighters read this book and then read it again. Love to all

Of course firefighting in 2015 is not nearly as dangerous as it was when Dennis was a fireman, but you still face the same obstacles and hardships mentioned in Dennis' stories. I loved the read. On to his next book.
