About this ebook

In 1988, psychologist Carol Dweck gave two groups of children a series of increasingly difficult puzzles. When children in the first group reached problems they could not solve, many became frustrated, disengaged, and wanted to stop. When children in the second group reached the same impossible problems, they leaned in, worked harder, tried different approaches — and many described the hardest problems as the most fun.

The children were not different in intelligence, in background, or in prior problem-solving ability. They were different in one thing: what they believed about intelligence itself.

The children in the first group believed that intelligence was a fixed quantity — you had it or you didn't, and challenging problems threatened to reveal that you didn't. The children in the second group believed that their abilities were expandable — that working hard on difficult problems was exactly how you became more capable.

Over the four decades since that observation, Dweck and hundreds of subsequent researchers have documented that this single belief difference — **what people think their abilities are made of** — predicts achievement, resilience, learning rate, social behavior, health outcomes, and the quality of intimate relationships across every context studied.

This is the beginning of the mindset story. But it is only the beginning.

Research on the broader architecture of human belief systems — the collection of explicit and implicit models about the self, the world, and the relationship between action and outcome — has documented a landscape of mental models whose influence on human performance and well-being rivals that of any external circumstance.

You do not experience reality directly. You experience your model of reality. And your model — the specific beliefs, assumptions, mental scripts, and unconscious patterns that constitute your internal world — determines more about the quality and outcomes of your life than most external circumstances.

The Mindset Laboratory is the scientific and practical exploration of that model: what it is made of, how it was built, how it constrains and enables you, and how, with deliberate effort, it can be transformed.
