About the author
현진건(玄鎭健)은 1920년 《개벽》에 단편 「희생화」를 발표하면서 등단하였고 이듬해 발표한 「빈처」부터 문단의 주목을 받기 시작했다. 《백조》의 동인으로 활동했으며 김동인, 염상섭과 더불어 한국 근대문학 초기에 단편소설 양식을 개척하고 사실주의 문학의 기틀을 마련한 것으로 평가된다. 대표적인 단편으로는 「술 권하는 사회」(1921), 「할머니의 죽음」(1923), 「운수 좋은 날」(1924), 「불」(1925), 「B사감과 러브레터」(1925), 「고향」(1926) 등이 있고, 『타락자』(1922), 『조선의 얼골』(1926), 『현진건 단편선』(1941) 등의 단편집과 『적도』(1939), 『무영탑』(1941) 등의 장편소설이 있다. 2009년 매일신문과 현진건문학상 운영위원회의 공동 주최로 ‘현진건문학상’이 제정되었다.
