About this ebook

In W. S. Maugham's Jack Straw, a dazzling farce of manners and mistaken identity, a fashionable hotel and an over-staged country house become battlegrounds for ambition, vanity, and desire. Jack Straw himself is the irresistible center of the comedy: a mysterious, adaptable man who moves with ease through every level of society, unsettling aristocrats, social climbers, and the newly rich alike. Around him swirl Ambrose Holland, Lady Wanley, the Parker-Jennings family, and a parade of guests obsessed with rank, money, and appearances. The Parker-Jennings, risen from modest beginnings, strain to impress the county with extravagant hospitality, imported music, and carefully chosen company, only to expose their own insecurity and snobbery. At the same time, Jack's sharp wit and effortless charm turn humiliation into opportunity, especially when he finds himself drawn to Ethel Jennings and pulled into a risky deception. As the supposed Archduke Sebastian of Pomerania is revealed to be a hotel waiter in borrowed dignity, Maugham delivers a sparkling satire of class pretension, romantic confusion, and the absurd bargains people make to seem important. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.

About the author

W. Somerset Maugham, born in 1874 in Paris to British parents and educated in England, led a life shaped by cosmopolitan experience, medical training, and extensive travel, all of which fed directly into his clear-eyed fiction and drama. After briefly working as a doctor, he turned fully to writing and became one of the most widely read English-language authors of the early twentieth century, earning acclaim for his plays, novels, short stories, and essays. His work is admired for its lucid style, sharp observation, and deep interest in the tensions between appearance and reality, duty and desire, social convention and private longing. Maugham had a gift for exposing the compromises people make in love, ambition, and morality, often with irony that is both elegant and unsparing. Though some of his settings belong to a vanished imperial world, his insights into self-deception, loneliness, and the search for meaning remain strikingly modern. He occupies an important place in literary history as a master storyteller who made sophistication seem effortless and psychological truth accessible. Readers who enjoy intelligent, accessible prose, morally nuanced characters, and stories that blend wit with human insight are especially likely to appreciate him today.
