About this ebook

A recovered literary puzzle from the world of Samuel Johnson and James Boswell opens into a tale of hidden loyalties, dangerous roads, and the uneasy meeting of Scotland and England. What first seems like a fragmentary curiosity soon becomes a vivid historical novel in which memory, politics, and identity are constantly under pressure. Boswell's observations of Johnson's silences about the Jacobite rising give way to the story of a Highland gentleman traveling under an assumed name, a man whose honor repeatedly collides with prudence. Lost in a bleak English forest, he is drawn into violence, rescued by a poacher boy, and guided to a secretive community of moor-men on a Roman causeway. There he encounters Amos Midwinter, a scarred fiddler whose music exposes his disguise and binds him to a hidden network of local allies. Together they cross moors and hills toward Brightwell, sheltering with farmers, evading scrutiny, and witnessing armed men on the roads as winter closes in. Their journey leads to the snowbound Sleeping Deer, where Lady Norreys arrives with elegance and mystery, and the inn's uneasy hospitality suggests that politics, class, and private intentions are about to collide. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.

About the author

John Buchan was a Scottish novelist, historian, diplomat, and politician whose life moved with unusual ease between public service and storytelling. Born in 1875 in Perth, he studied at Glasgow and Oxford before building a career that took him into journalism, colonial administration, intelligence work, and eventually the British Parliament, where he later served as Governor General of Canada. Yet it is as a writer that he remains best remembered, especially for his fast-paced adventure fiction, historical novels, and finely observed portraits of character under pressure. Buchan had a gift for blending suspense with moral seriousness, creating stories in which action, loyalty, courage, and duty are tested against danger and uncertainty. His work often explores the tension between civilization and wilderness, the lure of patriotism, the fragility of order, and the resilience required to meet crisis with intelligence and nerve. These concerns still feel fresh today, especially in an age that continues to wrestle with political instability, public responsibility, and the search for personal integrity. Buchan's prose is clear, confident, and richly readable, and his influence can be felt in later thriller writing and in the enduring appeal of the well-made adventure narrative. Readers who enjoy intelligent escapism, historical atmosphere, and protagonists facing high stakes with wit and resolve will find him especially rewarding, as will anyone interested in a writer who understood both the romance and the burden of public life.
