About this ebook

Analysis and Application of Industrial Metabolism for Process-oriented Industries presents a systematic framework for understanding and optimizing material flows and environmental behavior in process-oriented industries. Addressing the fragmented theory and unsystematic methods that have limited progress in industrial metabolism, this book integrates core principles, advanced analysis tools like material flow analysis (MFA), and empirical case studies to clarify metabolic pathways, quantify pollutant sources, and provide actionable solutions for cleaner production and green transformation. The book begins with foundational concepts of industrial metabolism and process-oriented industries, progressing through methods for metabolic analysis, data acquisition, and uncertainty handling. It features in-depth case studies on heavy metal and lead metabolism in smelting processes, simulation modeling, analysis of the electrolytic aluminum and resource recycling industries, symbiotic systems in sugar manufacturing, energy metabolism and carbon emissions in industrial agglomerations, and phosphorus tracing in river basins. The concluding chapters offer prospects for future research and practical application.Analysis and Application of Industrial Metabolism for Process-oriented Industries is an essential reference for environmental engineers, process industry practitioners, policy makers, and researchers in industrial ecology, environmental science, chemical engineering, and sustainable development. It equips readers with standardized frameworks, technical tools, and real-world cases to advance precise pollution control, resource efficiency, and the transformation to cleaner, greener industries.• Provides a comprehensive framework encompassing the definition of research scope, identification of material flows, establishment of material balance accounts, metabolic analysis, and interpretation of results• Develops a system structure model describing process connections, plus a unit function model simulating unit metabolic behavior• Covers process-oriented industries including lead smelting, aluminum smelting, sugar manufacturing, and coking• Sorts out systematically acquisition paths for production-type data and emission-type data, with supporting uncertainty handling methods such as Monte Carlo analysis and sensitivity analysis• Combines carbon emission metabolism in industrial agglomerations and total phosphorus source tracing in river basins

About the author

Dr. Bai Lu, a young elite in ecological and environmental protection, serves as a professor at the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences. Specialising in the prevention and control of industrial pollution, she uses industrial metabolism theory to study the mechanisms of material flow and the characteristics of pollutant emissions in industrial processes. Overcoming the limitations of traditional methods, which are overly subjective and imprecise, her innovative research identifies metabolic pathways, quantifies emissions and formulates regional reduction strategies. Dr Bai has earned seven provincial/ministerial science awards, as well as honours such as National Advanced Individual in Pollution Source Census and Outstanding Young Scientist.Zhang Yue, Senior Engineer at the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences. Specializes in industrial pollution source management, pollution pattern identification, and industrial park symbiotic network construction. Contributed to over twenty national projects, including the Second National Pollution Source Census, heavy air pollution research, and Yangtze/Yellow River ecological initiatives. Developed innovative methodologies for pollution accounting models (Minimum Pollution Generation Benchmark), emission parameter coding systems, and a collaborative pollution-carbon reduction evaluation model. Established national standards for ecological industrial parks, implemented in over seventy parks. Authored over thirty papers, several patents/soft copyrights, monographs, and received provincial/ministerial awards.Qiao Qi is a Second Grade Researcher, Chief Scientist of Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES), Doctoral Supervisor. She is an expert of the State Council Government Special Allowance and a national environmental protection professional and technical leader. Currently, she is the director of the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences, the director of the Ecological Industry Branch of the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences, the executive member of the Pollution Reduction and Carbon Reduction Collaborative Governance Committee of the Chinese Society of Environmental Sciences, and the executive director of the Industrial Ecological Economy and Technology Committee of the Chinese Society of Ecological Economics. She is mainly engaged in the research of cleaner production, eco-industry and industrial pollution source management. In the past five years, she has presided over more than twenty national and provincial key scientific research projects, authorized over ten invention patents, and won over ten provincial and ministerial science and technology awards.
