About this ebook

THE ROMAN EMPIRE: The Fall of Rome — Barbarians, Corruption and the End of the Ancient World

In August 410 AD, the Visigoths entered Rome, the first foreign army to do so in eight centuries.

At its height in 117 AD, the Roman Empire spanned from northern Britain to the edges of the Sahara, governing between fifty and eighty million people across roughly five million square kilometers. Its legions, roads, laws, and cities made it the dominant power of the ancient Western world.

Drawing on primary sources including Tacitus, Ammianus Marcellinus, and Priscus's account of Attila's court in 449 AD, alongside scholarship from Edward Gibbon, Peter Heather, Mary Beard, Adrian Goldsworthy, and Bryan Ward-Perkins, this book traces the empire's decline across twelve chapters. These cover the structural weaknesses emerging in the second century; the Crisis of the Third Century (235–284 AD), during which twenty-six emperors died in fifty years; the institutional corruption that weakened Roman governance; the pressures from the Visigoths, Vandals, and Huns along undefended frontiers; Attila's campaigns against both Roman empires between 441 and 453 AD; the empire's transition from paganism to Christianity and its effects on military and political capacity; the East-West division after 395 AD; the sack of Rome in 410 AD; the final emperors at Ravenna, whose authority was controlled by barbarian commanders; and the empire's lasting influence on later law, language, and institutions.
