About this ebook

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • For a chance at redemption, disgraced inspector Arkady Renko must solve a shocking murder in this “absolutely haunting” (Cosmopolitan) thriller from the author of Gorky Park.

“Martin Cruz Smith writes the most inventive thrillers of anyone in the first rank of thriller writers.”—The Washington Post Book World

He made too many enemies. He lost his party membership. Once Moscow’s top criminal investigator, Arkady Renko now toils in obscurity on a Russian factory ship working with American trawlers in the middle of the Bering Sea. But when an adventurous female crew member is picked up dead with the day’s catch, Renko is ordered by his captain to investigate an accident that has all the marks of murder. Up against the celebrated Soviet bureaucracy once more, Renko must again become the obsessed, dedicated cop he was and solve a chilling mystery fraught with international complications.

Renko is again out on the fringes, doggedly going through the motions of investigation, knowing he draws ever closer to truth and death. More than others in the series, I cringed, waiting for the ax to fall as Renko plods into ever more dangerous territory. The unstoppable force is caught between a rock and a hard place, and there is no avoiding what will either hurt him very badly or kill him. Soviet life in nutshell, he thinks. Well-crafted and satisfying.

Smith's gift for writing great novels is iced this time with the bittersweet return of the hero of Gorky Park.
