The Necessary Angel

After two weeks of struggle I finished this book with its tedious plot line and uninspiring relationships, smoothed along by the occasional witty sentence. The ending itself was a clever twist, in getting there however I wondered if it was necessary for the characters lives to have been recorded and read or if their metaphorical lives could in fact have happened without us observing them. Despite integrating 2015 current affairs to help ground it, the book had an airy theory feel to it being filled with long liturgy monologues. The monologues made sense word by word, but put together came out as semi-gibberish, and assuming you made it to the end of the paragraph you were left feeling that you'd missed an important piece of the story. I believe one would have to be a bilingual literary expert, like the main character, to understand, connect, and enjoy this novel; which does of course explain the rave reviews and awards.
