The author should be considered a Weave Mage - this second installment has me spun from the story found here causing me to really fall in love with this series. The lore of Scar is expounded and the stakes raised. Over the course of this novel we learn more about the protagonist and world at large. Sam does turn the genre upside-down while being familiar to us fantasy lovers. Effective writing with themes that resonate; I connected. And since I don't want to spoil this book: if you loved Seven Blades in Black (which I will now reread) you won't be disappointed.
