About this ebook

Summer by Romain Rolland is the second volume of his acclaimed novel cycle The Soul Enchanted, following Annette and Sylvie. Originally published in French as L’Été, the novel continues the story of Annette and her sister Sylvie as they navigate love, family, motherhood, independence, and the expectations imposed by society.

Set against the changing atmosphere of early twentieth-century France, the story focuses particularly on Annette’s decision to embrace motherhood outside the traditional institution of marriage. Her choice brings both happiness and emotional challenges as she confronts questions of love, personal freedom, responsibility, and social judgment. Her relationship with her sister Sylvie adds another important dimension to the narrative.

Rolland combines intimate character development with broader reflections on women’s independence, family relationships, social conventions, and the search for a meaningful life. Summer is a thoughtful work of classic French literary fiction and an important part of The Soul Enchanted series.
