Lewis Carroll (1832–1898) was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an English author, mathematician, logician, and photographer. Born in Daresbury, Cheshire, he was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, where he later became a lecturer in mathematics.
Carroll’s most famous works, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871), began as stories told to Alice Liddell, the daughter of the Dean of Christ Church, during a summer boating trip. Blending whimsical wordplay, absurd logic, and unforgettable characters, the Alice books revolutionized children’s literature by leaving behind moral instruction in favor of pure imagination.
In addition to the Alice stories, Carroll wrote the celebrated nonsense poem The Hunting of the Snark (1876), numerous mathematical treatises under his real name, and was a pioneering portrait photographer. His influence extends far beyond literature into film, theater, art, and popular culture, and his works remain among the most quoted and cherished in the English language.
