So this book was intelligently written when describing it's drama and violence. It was a good introduction to Penn Cage. It just didn't have the same power to grab as my other Greg Iles book Blood Memory had. It didn't have the same effect on THIS reader. It reminds me of a recently read book by Michael Connelly, Chasing The Dime. Both had an amazing amount of stupid decisions for the sake of pushing the story. The difference between the two was it's quota of fun. CTD had fun in its pursuits of truth and delved into situations of just awkward funny moments. It didn't take itself over-the-top serious. With TQG it was all very straight faced serious. There were no fun moments and the reasons behind going back home get completely abandoned. Caitlin deserves better than what she got in this book. Livy deserves a whole lot worse! Cage is a moron for not seeing it. And let me not forget to mention that this book could have shaved 150 pages off the story...a whole lot of filler here. 3.75/5.

I had read The Bone Tree first, and I found this novel to be much more high impact in tone and in action. It wasn't a negative experience, just unexpected. This book is well crafted, filled with nuance and surprise and overlaid with emotion and suspense.

A page turner! I couldn't put it down. So many twists and turns that were totally unexpected! 5 Stars from an AVID reader of 3 or more books per month. I'll be reading more!! Thanks!
