John Grisham is in familiar, enjoyable form with The French Illusion, an engaging thriller blending conspiracy, international espionage, and real human stakes. Hidden motives, powerful forces, and an overwhelmed lawyer keep the story moving while the emotional and financial toll on ordinary families adds heart. Although the middle takes time to build and some secondary characters could use more depth, the novel remains smartly layered and delivers plenty of intrigue and twists.

fun story but a disappointing ending where everyone gets to live happily ever after. On thing: The reference to the novel Gods and Generals being about the battle of Gettysburg is wrong. That book was about Andrew Jackson and Chancellorsville. It is a prequel to the book about Gettysburg, Killer Angels.

WOW! I’ve been waiting for the next John Grisham book. The last one was good, but I felt Grisham’s use of the book at the end to promote his cause was unnecessary and took away from the story. The French Illusion was perfect.
