About the author

Lewis Carroll (1832–1898) was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an English writer, mathematician, logician, photographer, and lecturer best known for creating some of the most beloved works in children’s literature. He achieved worldwide fame as the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass.

Born on January 27, 1832, in Daresbury, Cheshire, England, Carroll was the eldest son in a large family. From an early age, he displayed a talent for storytelling, puzzles, and wordplay—qualities that would later define his literary works. He was educated at Rugby School and later attended Christ Church, Oxford, where he excelled in mathematics.

Carroll spent much of his professional life at Christ Church, Oxford, serving as a mathematics lecturer for many years. Though respected as a scholar, he became far more famous for his imaginative writing. His interest in logic, paradox, and language deeply influenced the playful style of his fiction.

The inspiration for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland came during a boating trip in 1862, when Carroll told a fantastical story to three young sisters, including Alice Liddell. At their request, he later wrote the story down, and it was published in 1865 with illustrations by Sir John Tenniel.

The book was an immediate success and remains one of the most celebrated works of English literature. Filled with unforgettable characters such as the White Rabbit, Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat, and Queen of Hearts, the novel combines fantasy, satire, and clever linguistic humor in a way that appeals to both children and adults.

Carroll also wrote poetry, essays, and mathematical works. His poem Jabberwocky, featured in Through the Looking-Glass, is especially famous for its inventive language and enduring popularity.

In addition to writing, Carroll was an accomplished early photographer, producing portraits and artistic studies during the Victorian era. He was known as a private and meticulous individual, balancing a scholarly academic life with extraordinary creative imagination.

Lewis Carroll died on January 14, 1898, in Guildford. Today he is remembered as one of the most original voices in English literature. His works continue to inspire readers, scholars, filmmakers, and artists around the world, and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland remains a timeless classic of imagination and wit.
