“Lesbian necromancers explore a haunted gothic palace in space! Decadent nobles vie to serve the deathless emperor! Skeletons!” —Charles Stross on Gideon the Ninth

“Unlike anything I've ever read.” —V.E. Schwab on Gideon the Ninth

“Deft, tense and atmospheric, compellingly immersive and wildly original.” —The New York Times on Gideon the Ninth

She answered the Emperor's call.

She arrived with her arts, her wits, and her only friend.

In victory, her world has turned to ash.

After rocking the cosmos with her deathly debut, Tamsyn Muir continues the story of the penumbral Ninth House in Harrow the Ninth, a mind-twisting puzzle box of mystery, murder, magic, and mayhem. Nothing is as it seems in the halls of the Emperor, and the fate of the galaxy rests on one woman's shoulders.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, last necromancer of the Ninth House, has been drafted by her Emperor to fight an unwinnable war. Side-by-side with a detested rival, Harrow must perfect her skills and become an angel of undeath — but her health is failing, her sword makes her nauseous, and even her mind is threatening to betray her.

Sealed in the gothic gloom of the Emperor's Mithraeum with three unfriendly teachers, hunted by the mad ghost of a murdered planet, Harrow must confront two unwelcome questions: is somebody trying to kill her? And if they succeeded, would the universe be better off?

The author wants to tell a complicated story around religion, necromancy, and resurrection in space with a very unreliable narrator. But the author does no world building other than vague handwaves of: God exists. Why should you worship him? IDK. Here are some monsters God is afraid of. Why? Idk. Are they killing planets? Yes. Do I know why? I sure don't, but I would have liked to. The book doesn't make any sense till over 70% of the way through, at which point you will have continuously googled "should I finish this book" at least 9 times. They will say, "But the plot twist." The plot twist was so heavily foreshadowed that it was boring. I probably won't continue this series because, I doubt it gets any better. This is book 2 and I still know almost nothing about how this world works. You shouldn't be forced to wait till the last few chapters for a book to be "good." You can tell a plot twist while leaving the reader interested with some view of how the world around them works.

I really wanted to like this book series but I find them so difficult to read. There's a lot of things I like about the worlds and characters. The story loses me multiple times a page sometimes. Reading them feels like trying to finish a book I've been set as homework.

I have a feeling there is epic story here but it's so hard to follow and makes no sense. I've tried several times and have never made it more than 25% the way through.
