About the author

Theodor Storm (1817–1888) was a German poet and novelist from Schleswig-Holstein, master of the Novelle form. Der Schimmelreiter (1888) is his greatest work, but Aquis Submersus (1876) is his darkest — a tale of guilt and memory told through a seventeenth-century painter's diary.

Haberdash Books is dedicated to bringing overlooked works of European and world literature into English. We specialise in nineteenth and early twentieth-century fiction from lesser-translated languages and traditions.
