About this ebook

A profound exploration of the ache for quiet in a chaotic, noisy time of overstimulation and distraction—and the transformative effects of solitude, silence, and stillness—from the New York Times bestselling author of Practicing the Way and The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry.

“The noise of the world doesn’t just hurt your ears—it harms your soul. John Mark Comer shows in this wonderful book how to step back from the world and find God in stillness.”—Arthur C. Brooks, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Build the Life You Want

Modern living is inundated with noise, busyness, and a digital cycle fueled by outrage and fear. We are anxious, overstimulated, exhausted, and bone-dry in our souls. We ache for God yet can barely pay attention.

Drawing on the wisdom of the contemplative tradition and spiritual practices that date back to the earliest centuries of the church, Comer invites readers to rediscover an ancient path of quiet, peace, and serenity—to step out of the chronic noise and constant motion of the modern world into the still, silent presence of the God of peace.

What The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry was to the speed of the modern world, this book is to the noise of it.

As with the pace of modern living, the volume of the modern world can cut off our hearts from God, colonize our minds, and make “practicing the presence of God” virtually impossible. It can damage our bodies and degrade our spirits.

Comer is convinced quiet is the antidote—not just the quiet of a retreat or a morning hour, but an intentional quest to de-noise your overall life.

And in doing so, to live just a little slower and softer before God.

“What if the greatest threat to our faith today isn’t secularism but distraction?” Scrolling, texting, podcasts, Netflix, cable news, and even Bible study. There’s no shortage of noise and distractions in our world today. And if you’re like me, you’re ready and willing to fill ANY space in your life with one of the above — whether it be a 5 min drive to the store or 3 deep line at the grocery checkout. That’s what makes the quote above from John Mark Comer’s latest book so poignant and the book itself so important. There is no possibility of a rich and full life with Christ apart from contemplation and communion found in silence, solitude, and stillness. Period. That’s the overarching message of this book. And I agree wholeheartedly and was moved deeply by it — as I was by Practicing the Way a few years back. This book is filled with both the wisdom of ancient church fathers and mothers, mystics, and modern day contemplatives like Keating, Merton, and Willard while being dotted with scientific research on the impacts of noise and benefits of quiet and time in nature. It ends with 10 concrete tips for starting a practice of silence and solitude. I recommend this book highly and believe the Church and its people — especially those in the Western hemisphere — need to hear, digest, and wrestle with the invitations Comer makes within. Lives truly do depend on it.
