After the Second World War, Britain gave up its empire and stepped back from the international stage. The state dismantled its imperial apparatus and refashioned itself as a force for good in the world.

Or that's the myth the British establishment wants you to believe.

Matt Kennard shows the truth is very different. The acclaimed journalist and founder of Declassified UK has spent years battling to expose secrets the government would rather were kept hidden. Bringing together testimony from the officials who designed the system and the victims of Britain's foreign policy, he uncovers for the covert programmes that still destabilise the global landscape.

The Empire Never Died takes us on a worldwide tour of the places where Britain still has a profound-and negative-impact: the RAF bases in Cyprus facilitating Israel's genocide in Gaza; the military and intelligence base in Gibraltar used to spy on North Africa; and Britain's key support for Saudi Arabia during its savage war on Yemen.

From lying, war-hungry politicians to corrupt arms deals, from exploitative oil companies to overreaching spy surveillance, Britain is far from an innocent actor on the world stage.

The empire didn't end; it just learned to cover its tracks.

PRAISE FOR THE EMPIRE NEVER DIED

'This is a book of critical importance, an essential corrective to the benign fairytales we have all absorbed about Britain and its impacts on the world.' George Monbiot

'Thanks to journalists like Matt Kennard, there will forever be a record of the damage done - even as we speak - to the world by the British empire. This is a vital record of its secrecy, rapacious exploitation, and sinister criminality in Gaza and beyond. It should be taught in schools.' Fatima Bhutto

'This brilliant if harrowing book lays out the malignant force of British imperial power throughout the world. Kennard shows precisely and with great acuity just how this imperial power cloaks itself in the language of finance, military logistics, and commerce even as it lays waste to the world.' Laleh Khalili

'A scathing and meticulously researched exposure of modern British imperialism . . . The Empire Never Died shatters the myth of a post-colonial Britain to reveal a state still actively projecting global violence and subverting self-determination under the guise of 'security.'' Mohammed El-Kurd

'Matt Kennard has produced a work of investigative journalism based on remorseless on-the-ground research of eye-popping contemporary relevance. He unveils a system of covert or unreported arrangements which enable successive British governments to support and promote dictatorships abroad while suppressing democracy at home.' Peter Oborne
