About this ebook

A new interpretation of Molière's work, drawn from contemporary archival sources, showing for the first time how he shaped an independent career between the opposing pressures of aristocratic patrons and mercantile publishers. Exploiting the alternate roles of actor and courtier, he progressed from social success to artistic achievement but, to the dissatisfaction of his royal patrons, Molière put the priorities of his own authorial status before the notion of service at Court; important new bibliographical material illustrates his long war in defence of his authorial rights against a cartel of unscrupulous publishers.

The six chapters of this absorbing study challenge the current orthodoxy of a programmatic ideology in Molière's work. Raising basic questions about the writer's perception of her/himself, and about the French cult of classicism, this work will interest all specialists of seventeenth-century French theatre and social history.
