For years, the children of Willow Creek obeyed. They skipped the dark Victorian with the blacked-out windows and the porch light that never came on. They told stories about the old woman who lived there—how she only answered the door on Halloween, and only if you were very, very unlucky.
This year, a group of kids decides the stories are just stories.
Armed with pillowcases and courage, they march up the cracked walkway, ring the bell, and shout the sacred words. The door creaks open. Something smiles. Something offers candy that glows faintly in the dark.
By morning, three children are missing. The ones who return won’t speak. And the house at the end of the street has a new porch light burning—bright, red, and waiting.
Because tonight, the treats are over.
It’s time for the trick.
