SHANNON ZELLARS is a novelist, developmental editor, and story engineer who has spent two decades working at the intersection of epic narrative structure and speculative fiction. A graduate of the Odyssey Writing Workshop and a former editorial reader for *Analog Science Fiction and Fact*, Zellars has guided hundreds of manuscripts from first draft to publication through editorial work with both debut and award-nominated authors
Zellars's own fiction has appeared in *Clarkesworld*, *Lightspeed*, and *Beneath Ceiling Tones*, and their craft essays on narrative architecture, archetypal character design, and the business of writing for genre markets have been featured at Writer Unboxed, Jane Friedman's blog, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA) blog. Their short story collection, *The Last Ship and Other Departures*, was a finalist for the Eugie Foster Memorial Award.
Zellars teaches story engineering at conferences and workshops internationally, including Gen Con, Worldcon, the Pacific Northwest Writers Association conference, and regional SFWA events. Their teaching philosophy centers on the conviction that story structure is not a constraint but a liberation: the writer who masters the architecture of narrative earns the freedom to write with abandon within a frame that will hold.
When not writing, reading, or editing, Zellars can be found overcomplicating a home-brewed TTRPG campaign set in the universe of their unpublished space opera trilogy—which they insist will be ready to show people any decade now. They live in Portland, Oregon, with a bookshelf that has been reinforced three times and two cats who serve as critical but merciless first readers.
