Reluctant Heroine or Chosen One?

Join Afshaneh on her journey and discover the answer.

Afshaneh, a young girl with forbidden magic stands in the way of the return of an ancient evil.

With a band of loyal friends and an unexpected mentor, she will face danger and adventure. There will be quests to find ancient artefacts and the cure for a deadly poison. She will journey to a distant city to learn her heritage and try to prevent a dark mage from gaining terrible power. Along the way she will learn that not everything she thought she knew is true and love can come from the least expected places.

She will deal with secrets and enemies from the distant past as well as her own past and learn who she can truly be.  She will also discover that a heroine is just an ordinary person doing the right thing.

Can she rise to the challenges ahead, or will The Fallen return?

For anyone who enjoys YA without too much angst or alpha males – these books are full of friendship, co-operation, supportive males and a gentle, slow-burn romance sub-plot.

About the author

I have always loved reading and I think I have made up stories for as long as I can remember too. First it was just little things that I can’t remember as well as long-running adventures for my dolls. Other worlds to explore, sword fights and rescues.

I was introduced to ‘Lord of the Rings’ at about 11 and I was hooked on fantasy. When I began to write longer stories they always had an element of magic. There was also adventure and made-up worlds – if I made up the worlds and characters it didn’t matter if I knew how things worked in the ‘real’ world, I could make it all up! Of course, I always do plenty of research about climate and flora and fauna, it might be made-up but I want it to be believable!

The third novel I wrote, The Shard, I used in a course ‘Constructing a Novel’ from Penguin Random House The Writer’s Academy in early 2019. This was so helpful. But I also made the decision to self-publish after a lot of research. The Shard went live in 2020.

Holding that fist print edition of my book in my hand was the most amazing feeling and I wanted to do it again.

Gradually I created two continents, Thalian – where The Darkling Duology, The Lightwielders, and more recently The Beekeeper’s Chronicles are set, and Escarnia – where The Crystal Mages and The Fallen are set.

Other things you will find in my books are an element of mystery, friendship and co-operation. The female main character may turn out to be a Chosen One due to birth or circumstance, but she doesn’t feel special at all. And she doesn’t want to be the heroine. She is doing what needs to be done because it is right and who else is there? But you are guaranteed a satisfactory/happy ending.

There is also an item/object that appears in some form in all of my books – have you spotted it?

This series grew out of what happens in The Crystal Mages Trilogy. Afshaneh and her special Crystal came first, and then where it would be set and then the bad guys… It was tricky planning out my very first series longer than a trilogy. At one point I had hoped to write 5 books, but the story decided otherwise. I wanted a character who was a bit reckless and had secrets so might get herself into trouble, but was still a loyal friend and would choose to do the right thing.

I live in Hampshire in the south of England (UK) so I write in British English. I juggle being a mum with being an author and sometimes have to go and find out what the cats have chucked off the bookcase on the landing in their bid to gain my attention! I think they’d like to help me write!
