About this ebook

The Dead Lake and Other Tales by Paul Heyse is a collection of four compelling works of nineteenth-century German fiction, translated into English by Mary Wilson. Originally published in 1870, the collection includes “A Fortnight at the Dead Lake,” “Doomed,” “Beatrice,” and “Beginning and End.”

The stories explore themes of love, loss, sacrifice, regret, morality, and the complexities of human relationships. The title story, A Fortnight at the Dead Lake, follows Dr. Eberhard, a troubled man seeking escape from painful memories, whose encounter with a young mother and her seriously ill child challenges his despair and gives him a renewed sense of purpose.

Throughout the collection, Heyse combines emotional storytelling with atmospheric settings and sensitive character studies. His stories move between melancholy, romance, tragedy, and moments of hope, offering a thoughtful portrait of people confronting difficult choices and the consequences of love.
