About this ebook

Updated and enhanced with numerous worked-out examples and exercises, this Second Edition continues to present a thorough, concise and accurate discussion of fundamentals and principles of thermodynamics. It focuses on practical applications of theory and equips students with sound techniques for solving engineering problems.

The treatment of the subject matter emphasizes the phenomena which are associated with the various thermodynamic processes. The topics covered are supported by an extensive set of example problems to enhance the student's understanding of the concepts introduced. The end-of-chapter problems serve to aid the learning process, and extend the material covered in the text by including problems characteristic of engineering design.

The book is designed to serve as a text for undergraduate engineering students for a course in thermodynamics.

Key Features:

• Devotes separate chapters to treatment of statistical thermodynamics and kinetic theory of ideal gases

• Includes a revised chapter on heat transfer theory

• Provides systematic problem-solving methodology to fortify material throughout

• End-of-chapter summaries help students identify key concepts

• Includes a set of thermodynamic property tables for ready reference by students

About the author

ETHIRAJAN RATHAKRISHNAN, Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, is well-known internationally for his research in the area of high-speed jets. The limit for the passive control of jets, called the Rathakrishnan Limit, is a contribution to the field of jet research. The concept of breathing blunt nose (BBN), which reduces the positive pressure at the nose and increases the positive pressure at the base simultaneously, is his contribution to drag reduction at hypersonic speeds. He has published a large number of research articles in many reputed international journals. He is a Fellow of many professional societies, including the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Professor Rathakrishnan serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the International Review of Aerospace Engineering (IREASE) and International Review of Mechanical Engineering (IREME) journals. He has authored eighteen books, including Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics, Helicopter Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics: An Introduction, published by PHI Learning, Delhi.
