About this ebook

Hire Right is a detailed, practical guide to The Small Business Owner's Guide to Hiring Employees for readers who want a clear path from understanding the topic to using it confidently in real situations. The book is designed as a structured learning companion rather than a shallow overview: it introduces the core ideas, explains why they matter, then develops them through realistic examples, guided practice, scenario-based explanations, and common mistakes to avoid. Readers are taken step by step from foundational concepts into everyday applications, with each chapter building on the previous one so the material feels progressive, usable, and easy to revisit. The main areas of focus include Is Now the Right Time to Hire?, What a Wrong Hire Really Costs You, Design the Job Before You Post It, The Legal Starter Kit: Employee or Contractor?, Write a Job Post That Attracts the Right People, Where Great Candidates Actually Come From, Screen Resumes Fast and Fair, Interview with a Plan: Questions That Predict Performance, The Questions You Can Never Ask, Verify What Matters: References and Background Checks, giving the book a concrete learning arc that moves from orientation and confidence-building to applied communication, problem solving, and independent practice. The writing style is direct, supportive, and accessible, making the book suitable for self-study, classroom reinforcement, professional development, or personal improvement. It emphasizes practical understanding over abstract theory, so readers can immediately connect the lessons to conversations, decisions, habits, and challenges they are likely to face outside the page. By the end of the book, readers should have not only a stronger grasp of the subject, but also a collection of repeatable strategies, useful language patterns, mental models, and practical routines they can continue applying after they finish reading.

About the author

CHERIE JOHNSON is a hiring and workforce consultant who has spent more than fifteen years helping small business owners find, hire, and keep the people their companies depend on. Early in her career, she led human resources for a fast-growing regional retail group, where she learned firsthand how small teams succeed and fail at hiring. That experience convinced her that the biggest gaps in the job market are not on the candidate side but in the tools and confidence of the owners doing the hiring.

Today, Cherie works exclusively with small and family-owned businesses, showing owners how to build honest job descriptions, run structured interviews, onboard new hires with a ninety-day plan, and retain good people without expensive compensation packages. She has hired and coached everyone from first-time counter staff to senior managers, and she has survived a few spectacularly bad hires along the way, which she considers her most valuable education.

Her writing has appeared in business and trade publications geared toward independent owners, and she speaks regularly at chambers of commerce, trade association conferences, and small business workshops. Cherie lives in the Midwest with her family, where she is a proud customer of several small businesses that manage to hire right every single time. *Hire Right* is her first book.
