About the author

Wallace Delois Wattles (1860–1911) was a pioneering American author and thinker in the field of self-development, success philosophy, and metaphysical science. Born into modest circumstances in the United States, Wattles dedicated his life to studying the laws of success, personal power, and spiritual development. Despite facing poverty and obscurity for much of his life, he left behind a legacy that has inspired millions worldwide.

Wattles was deeply influenced by the New Thought movement, a philosophy that emphasizes the power of thought, visualization, and alignment with universal laws to manifest one’s desires. He studied the writings of great thinkers like Ralph Waldo Emerson and combined spiritual principles with practical action to develop a formula for success that was simple, clear, and effective.

His most well-known work, The Science of Getting Rich (1910), remains a cornerstone in the personal development world. In it, Wattles argues that getting rich is a systematic and replicable process, and that anyone—regardless of background—can achieve wealth by thinking and acting in a “Certain Way.” This powerful little book was later cited as a key inspiration behind The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, bringing his teachings to a new generation of readers.

Wattles also wrote other notable works including:

The Science of Being Great

The Science of Being Well

He died shortly after publishing his most famous book, but his ideas continue to live on, empowering readers with the belief that thoughts shape reality, and that success is not a matter of luck, but of understanding and applying universal principles.
