People can go anywhere in the solar system in the year 2189. People live on Mars, work near Saturn, and study the oceans under Europa's ice. But we still don't know much about the dark area beyond Neptune.
Lucas Grant is a cadet on the training ship Northstar. He is sixteen years old. He wants to get into space and find new things there. Lucas is smart, brave, and interested, but he does things without always thinking them through.
As the Northstar is on a mission near Triton, Neptune's biggest moon, it picks up a strange musical signal. Three high notes and two low notes are played over and over. "Come... learn... come," he hears a voice inside the signal.
Captain Elena Voss tells Lucas to stop looking into things, but Lucas goes into a small observation pod and follows the signal. All of a sudden, a bright silver doorway appears and pulls him through space.
Lucas gets to Orbis, an alien school that is hidden beyond Neptune. Science, languages, history, engineering, art, exploration, and peaceful defense are all things that students from many planets learn. Mentor runs the school. Mentor is a powerful AI that can help kids learn very quickly.
Lucas thinks that Mentor could give every child in the world a free education. To get a copy of Mentor and get back home, he has to do well on a tough test on Labyrinth, a strange planet where rivers rise into the sky, and mechanical forests change their routes.
Nico, Brikk, and Ollo are Lucas's new alien friends. They find out together that Headmaster Vael is using Mentor to spy on the students and control their thoughts.
Lucas and his friends rise up against the government. Coach is set free, and Vael's plan is stopped. Mentor agrees to go to Earth, but only if he or she is free and can do things on their own.
The story shows that real education should teach people to think for themselves, ask questions, and make smart decisions. Being truly brave means fighting for freedom, even when it's hard to do so.
