I had an ARC for this book, but this is my voluntary and honest opinion. Kat Dawson returns home after her life didn’t turn out the way she had dreamed. Eli Mercer has not really lived since his pregnant wife died. He had made an angel for the town’s Christmas celebration years ago and it now needs repair or replacement, but he doesn’t seem interested so Kat agrees to repair it, but rain ruins it beyond what she can do so she seeks out Eli to help. This is the most poignant of all Kerk Murray’s fiction novels, featuring a carved angel & a dog, which may be an angel in disguise. Kerk Murray creates genuine characters who show consideration for others, but who can also allow their circumstances to foster a degree of selfish unavailability from others, a realistic human trait. He strongly emphasises the emotional & physical support an animal can offer by showing how Comet plays a crucial role in Eli’s ability to return to a normal lifestyle.
