About the author

Frédéric Bastiat was a renowned French economist and political philosophy theorist of the 19th century philosophy. In his seminal 1850 classic essay, The Law, he powerfully argued for Limited government and the Purpose of government as being solely the protection of Individual rights, including Liberty, Property rights, and Personal liberty. Bastiat famously detailed how State power leads to Legal plunder, which he defined as the use of Force of law or Collective force to take from one group to benefit another. He believed Law is force and its only legitimate role is Organized justice, serving as Individual defense against injustice, not engaging in State intervention in Voluntary action. The book provides a strong Protectionism critique and Socialism critique, identifying Misconceived philanthropy and Naked greed as roots of the Perversion of law. Bastiat condemned specific instances of Organized injustice like Protectionist tariffs, Government subsidies, Progressive taxation, and the concept of a Welfare state. He also touched upon concepts such as Rent seeking and offered insights into Human nature. While admiring the American ideal of government, he noted issues like slavery and tariffs as deviations. His Universal suffrage critique stems from the fear that when law becomes an instrument of plunder, political participation devolves into fighting for access to that plunder. Bastiat's work champions Free market principles and is a foundational text for Classical liberalism and Laissez-faire economics. Available as a Kindle eBook, this Public domain edition presents his enduring arguments against Critique of statism and for the true meaning of Justice and Natural rights. His insights into Responsibility and State education also remain highly relevant. This essay is an essential read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Philosophy of law and his Government intervention critique.
