About this ebook

ACS In Focus Chemical Thermodynamics is a compact, coherent primer on chemical thermodynamics that bridges classical equilibrium concepts and modern non-equilibrium theory, with an emphasis on conceptual understanding rather than memorization. This primer gives insight into the wonders of thermodynamics not only by phenomenological descriptions but also by connecting physics and chemistry to the math. To make the most of this approach, it is useful to have a working knowledge of calculus. Targeted readers include senior undergraduate students, or graduate students in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, mathematics, and physics, as well as researchers seeking a concise but principled refresher on thermodynamics.

About the author

Erik C. Neyts is a professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. He is the head of the research group MOSAIC (Modelling and Simulation in Chemistry). He obtained his Ph.D. in 2006 on molecular dynamics simulations of thin amorphous carbon films. Since then, he has used both DFT and classical simulation techniques to study nanomaterials, surface processes, catalysis, plasma-catalysis, and more recently, astrochemistry. He has (co-)authored over 200 peer-reviewed journal papers. His teaching involves courses on general chemistry, chemical thermodynamics, surface processes, and astrochemistry.
